Palermo, 2005: The best Polled Hereford wins award
ARGENTINA 28 (ANIA) The Argentine Polo Great Champions were chosen in the equine category. Aberdeen Angus females to be confirmed today. The best sheep and goat breeders will also be rated. The fervor generated by the awards given to the best breeders at the Rural Exhibition in Palermo continued yesterday when the Polled Hereford Female Great Champion was elected in the bovine category, as well as the equine Great Champions of the Argentine Polo breed. Palermo had, once again, a day full of emotion and with full stands. Forty-six thousand people visited the exhibition. Since its opening, last Thursday, the number of visitors has reached 293,000 people.

The audience clapped and cheered at the jury’s verdicts. In the Polled Hereford category, the Female Great Champion was box 1153, from the firm Gregorio, Numo and Noel Werthein, Cabaña La Paz, from the Buenos Aires locality of Adolfo Gonzales Chaves, and exhibitor Hugo Sigman, owner of Los Murmullos farm (www.losmurmullos.com.ar), from Cholila, Chubut. “This female, called Sudestada, which will be two years old in October, is the daughter of Sureño, the breed's number one bull in the country. She had been to Palermo before in her mother’s womb, which was the Great Champion in 2003,” said Carlos Ojea Rullán, genetics consultant for farms.

Clearly moved by the win in the Palermo track, Daniel Werthein and Hugo Sigman gave each other a long hug. “It is an award to a very fine daily selection job. We came with a very feminine, harmonic female, with great muscle mass," he comments. “This is a very special day, because this reminds us of a friend," added Sigman, referring to the recently deceased president of the Asociación Argentina de Angus, Leo Werthein, who received 12 Great Champions in Palermo in the last 13 years. Actually, jury member Gustavo Ambroggio had a tough job choosing the Female Great Champion from among 8 other females. The quality was very even. “They all have the characteristics we are looking for,” he said.

Luiz Manzano Small, president of the Asociación Criadores de Hereford, agreed with the jury. “It would seem that all farmers followed the same road to achieve a female of medium size, capable of producing an animal for the local market as well as for export," he pointed out. The Reservado Female Great Champion Polled Hereford was box 1180, by Don Benjamín SA, from Saldungaray, province of Buenos Aires. In the Argentine Polo category, the Female Great Champion was box 2244, from Sucesión by Gonzalo Juan Tanoira, from the locality of Casbas in Buenos Aires. “It is a two and a half years old mare, called Ginebra. If she's a good player, I see in her a significant future as a mother," indicated Javier Tanoira, company member.

The Reservado Female Great Champion was box 2249, by AnaySur SA, from Intendente Alvear, La Pampa. The Reservado Male Polo Argentino Great Champion was for box 2203, by Ellerstina SA, from Casbas, province of Buenos Aires. "It is a very uniform polo, close to the ground, with good hips and legs", said Juan Carlos Di Caro, from Ellerstina SA. The Reservado Male Great Champion was box 2214, by Carlos Bartolomé Ratto and Gustavo Frederking, from General Pinto, province of Buenos Aires. Equipment Meanwhile, the agricultural equipment pavilion stepped up its rhythm. “There have been enquiries and interest by producers,” Sergio Di Benedetto pointed out, sales and marketing manager at Massey Ferguson, who brought to the event, apart from other news, their tractor models MF 660 and MF 680, of 160 and 180 HP.
